Model student, activist, and friend, Padulsky leaves a legacy

An inspiration, a role model, a star student, an activist, a loving brother, son, grandchild, and best friend of many. The friends, family, advisers, and professors of Tim Padulsky, CSOM '09, all remember the enormous smile, warm heart, and unrelenting positive spirit that the 20-year-old boy had before his life was cut short on Sunday.
With money tight, students find new means to cut costs

Editor's Note: A struggling economy has Americans cutting back and reevaluating finances. With higher education expenses on the rise, and student debt piling on, creative means of cutting costs are being presented now more than ever before. Looking at how this downturn is affecting life for students at BC, this is the second article in a series examining what is being done to help students beat the economic crunch.
Brighton Campus organic garden yields fresh produce, spices

Fresh peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, basil, and cucumbers are now all within walking distance of Boston College. Real Food BC's organic garden is located down Commonwealth Avenue on the Brighton Campus, and features organic produce gardened by BC students and members of the local community.
Students, faculty adjust as course management system is upgraded

Some students may have been surprised this semester when they were told to log into Blackboard Vista rather than WebCT for their course homework, discussions, or readings. Over the summer, the University changed the course management system to Bb Vista, which is the new name for the existing line of software, said Elizabeth Clark, director of Instructional Design and eTeaching Services, who explained that the transition was more like a major upgrade than a move to a completely new site.
With the cost of texts rising, students turn to piracy to cut costs

While online music piracy has been prevalent since the late 1990s, a new ilk is emerging that affects publishers and college students everywhere: textbook piracy. With the cost of textbooks on the rise, financially strapped students are looking for ways to cut expenses.

A group of 20 Boston College students stood out from the throng of suited undergrads who crowded Conte Forum during Tuesday's career fair. Those students, clad in "Who Would Jesus Bomb" T-shirts and kneeling silently, were protesting the presence of weapons manufacturers at the annual BC career fair.

During every presidential election season, myriad issues are brought before the populace to be presented, discussed, and debated, and one perennial topic is the issue of higher education. This year, America is presented with a bounty of solutions from both candidates to the education system's difficulties - solutions that can have serious effects not only on individuals but also on universities such as Boston College.

Recent studies show the most popular majors do not always bring in the highest income. Psychology, the second most popular major nationwide, according to the Princeton Review, barely scrapes in at No. 19 on the list of most lucrative majors, recently compiled online by Forbes Magazine, with an average starting salary of $34,700.

"We listen in pluralism and learn in diversity," said Rev. Howard Gray, S.J., last night at a presentation entitled the "Jesuit Mission and the Challenge of Pluralism." Gray, who serves at Georgetown University as the assistant to the president for special projects, was invited to speak at Boston College by the Center for Ignatian Spirituality.
