The Scene Articles

Between the elaborate plots on TV (I'm officially Lost) and the schlep to the Fenway theater, the entertainment experience has lost some of its appeal. Who has time for all of that watching and thinking? I'd rather just wait for the book version. And here it is.

In today's modern rock scene, Incubus has long been locked into the fairly specific genre of alt-metal with such acts as Korn, the Deftones, Staind, and many other prominent, but in-and-out, loud bands. Because of this often restricting label, Incubus has largely failed to attain the recognition and laudation that they otherwise might have achieved as an intelligent, innovative rock presence.
The holiday season isn't just about building snowmen - stay warm with these classics (and then some) on DVD

Unless you've been stuck at the North Pole for the past 60 years, chances are most of these titles look familiar. Nevertheless, here are my DVD picks for a little variety this holiday season: some classics that will please pretty much everyone, and some alternative choices for the Grinch in all of us.

Before their fame and mainstream success, when touring in Boston, the Goo Goo Dolls would avoid rundown and dilapidated hotels by spending a few nights in the Boston College residence halls. With the help of their former manager, whose brother was a BC football player, the band briefly experienced BC life firsthand.

I must admit I've been pretty stressed-out lately. The weeks approaching finals always sweep by - crammed with final quizzes and homework, 20-page research papers, practice finals, and other pests of academia. I've noticed a trend in what I've been listening to lately: I've subconsciously shifted my playlists from all types of music (previously containing a good amount of metal due to Guitar Hero II) to stuff that is soothing and meditative.

Ross and Rachel were one of TV's greatest couples. For ten years, we watched Friends every Thursday. We were strung along unwillingly, hoping to catch a hint of when they would finally be together, once and for all. Every year there would be some kind of incident that would make us believe that would be the year.

It's not that our room lacked Christmas cheer - our Christmas spirits were great. Yet with only a single strand of lights, our room was seriously lacking the gentle glow that defines Christmas. Our eighth floor male counterparts were not so unprepared, boasting consistently of the excessively festive atmosphere that their room could barely contain.

This is it: the last "Drink Up" column. I'm handing in my cocktail shaker and martini glass after this one. It's been a good year, so let's go out with a holiday treat: the Candy Cane Martini. There are some occasions that call for a classy bev, and the martini is a chameleon that can be altered to fit any celebration.

Here at Boston College we don't run into too many dramatic artistic statements. I don't know, that's just not really our thing. Liz Singleton, A&S '08, seems to think otherwise. Yesterday, you may have noticed a young woman outside of the bookstore, comfortably sitting cross-legged in an igloo-shaped, copper cage.

Anxious about those upcoming exams? Stressed out over all of those unnecessarily large, last-minute assignments? Take pleasure in a worthwhile study break and use the opportunity to enjoy Boston one last time before the holiday break arrives. Aside from viewing the lights at the Boston Common, a wealth of exciting holiday entertainment awaits the stressed-out student this weekend.

"Ain't nothin fancy, mind ya, just a place where good folks go." This is the self-proclaimed slogan of The Village Smokehouse, a restaurant that has been serving authentic, open-pit Texas barbecue in Brookline Village since 1987. Stepping into the restaurant, I could see that the motto didn't lie.

Unaccompanied Minors 'Tis the season for a lot of things: the biting New England cold, people fritzing out over finals, and awful holiday movies. Two of the best holiday movies ever made were about families and Christmas. These are, undoubtedly, Die Hard 1 and 2, and this film sadly promises to be nothing like them.

Copperfield's is a place where you can hang out with your friends, grab some pitchers, and line up to drink them like cattle at a feed line. The "tables" downstairs consist of rows of simple wooden bars, which is problematic when the place is crowded because people are packed into these rows like - well, cattle.

Oh, boy, is there a lot of gossip to catch up on. It has been two weeks since I last threatened to injure Kim Cattrall and dished on the TomKat wedding. Well, that era has passed and there is a hot, new engaged couple in town. On Nov. 30, Eva Longoria and Tony Parker announced that they were indeed engaged.
