"Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, 20 years from now, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you … "
- The Sunscreen Song
At my very first Christmas dinner freshman year, I was scared out of my mind, and comforted only by the fact that everyone crying their eyes out in Mod 14B raved about how The Heights had become their life and had given them a new family of people to love. At the time, I was in doubt, but immediately I found this to be true, and after two years of being a part of this organization, it is so surreal to be leaving. I find myself partially not believing that the years of red pen, grammatical errors, special sections, and classifieds have come to an end. The Heights has been responsible for almost every wonderful memory I have had at Boston College, and has brought so many incredible people into my life. From Assistant Copy to Special Projects to Business Assistant, I have learned so many new skills along the way. And from Heights Halloweens to the insomnia of Christmas Dinners to New Hampshire 2006 and 2007, I have had so much fun. It's amazing how rewarding this job has been. It is difficult to summarize everything that has happened while on The Heights, as evidenced by the fact that I sit here, staring at the screen, wondering how to possibly do justice to this experience. So I turn to the people who have truly made the past two years so incredibly worthwhile …
PHIL - You are the reason I joined The Heights in the first place and for that - and so much more - I owe you an infinite amount of gratitude. Thank you for always pushing me to pursue my goals and for bringing me to where I am today. You have been one consistently amazing aspect of my life since freshman year. Through all the ups and downs at BC thus far, you have been my rock. Thank you for your friendship and love. Thank God for FLIP. I love you infinitely.
PILAR - You, my dear, are the absolute best. Thank you for becoming someone who I can call my best friend. I am so incredibly proud of you and you will do wonderful work as EIC - since I met you in McElroy on that fateful day, I have been continually impressed by you in so many ways. I cannot wait to play "Where's Ian?" more often, bombard Superman's Mod, and eat soy beans every chance we get. And by the time we graduate, we must conquer the 50-yard line. Seriously, I am so thankful for you and how close we have grown since freshman year. The Heights won't know what hit it next semester. I love you.
JILL - Our honorary Heights member … I thought I'd send you some love since you basically are part of the board. Thank you for also being my best friend. I love our Friday lunch/coffee dates that last for hours, and snuggling with you and Pilar in your bed. Thank you for being who you are and always brightening up the office when you come in just to say hello.
CHRIS - I am so thankful for getting to know you this past year. I'm going to miss you like crazy when you're in Cairo … who will bring us Trader Joe's treats!? And I have to admit, I will even miss the red bat just a little bit. I hope you have an absolutely incredible time abroad; I know you're going to love it and soak up every thing you see. Much love.
JESS - Truly's love! I love you. From the tri-pod dog to the winter beach party to teaching me about BC basketball, you have been such a tremendous friend and I am so happy that you are taking such a
powerful role on the board this year. You will do amazing things. I'd better start seeing you more, even if it just means a spontaneous lunch at Hillside now and then (just don't yell at them for putting honey mustard on my chips). And if Tim Hudson won't marry you, I will.
BLAIR - My comm girlfriend, I love you! I am so proud of you for joining the board; you impressed everyone at elections and this is truly your calling. Good luck!
JOELLE & ZACH - You two are simply wonderful. I am so happy to welcome you to the board. I am so impressed by both of you and your continuous hard work so far this semester. You are two reasons why I absolutely love being an RA. Good luck this year; I'm right across the hall/up two flights of stairs if you ever need anything. Love you both to pieces.
MARIEL - You crack me up. I'm sorry I was unable to follow in your footsteps this year. You'd better keep in touch with me because you are absolutely fabulous. Love you.
IAN - Thank you for always being so nice to me. And, as creepy as this sounds, I will continue to always look for you at BC events! You are one of the most genuine people I have ever met.
JULIA - Amazing job last issue … keep rocking the classifieds! You are an absolute sweetheart and you're going to love the board.
Q - I don't even know what to say to you except that you are one of my favorite people at BC. I wish we really were neighbors because that'd be sweet. Love you buddy.
BERNIE - I miss you! I feel incomplete without taking my Bernie & Phil pictures every weekend. You are missed by the entire board and so incredibly respected around here. I hope you have loved every second at Harvard, and thank you for taking the time to continue seeing everyone around here who loves you.
TULA, COURTNEY, JACKIE, LEXI, MADELINE, JACKIE, LISA - May there be many girls' nights to come. Love you all.
GRANT - You know you love classifieds and are just in denial. That is all. ( … Good luck this year!)
JUICY - I miss not having the same hair as you anymore. You always cheer me up and keep me smiling … Good luck leading Arts!
KEITH - There is too much to be said about you - you're crazy and I love it. I'll miss not having class with you so I'd better see you around because your general attitude just puts me in a great mood.
TUE - You are adorable! The board is so lucky to have you … I will miss your smiling face so I'd better run into you on campus.
PAT - You have always been a joy to say hello to first thing upon entering the office. You have done such an amazing job and thank you for being so caring. Show those FLIPs how amazing The Heights is.
FOUHY - You did an incredible job last year and through your leadership the paper has grown so much. Relax this year; you've done so much already.
LAUREN - Thank you for always being so helpful, and being such a great boss. Good luck with wherever you end up next year.
GIVLER - Newton will always be better than Upper ;) Just kidding. I'm glad you don't hate me. Good luck this year; you are wonderful.
MKP - You couldn't be more perfect for the role of GM. Good luck and much love.
DAVE, TOM (REEVES?), STEVEN - You have been missed this year. Just want to thank you again for an absolutely incredible first year on the board … you are responsible for so many of my wonderful
memories with The Heights. LT4.
PAST & PRESENT EDITORS - Thank you for all the love and support you have offered me, and for bringing me to where I am today. I love each and everyone of you and will always remember these two
amazing years. Good luck wherever you end up.
MOM - Thank you for being my biggest fan and a constant supporter of The Heights! I love you.
Here's to red pens, late nights, and Heights family ...
All my love,
Erika
