Eagles sweep Frozen Four, take championship title over Notre Dame in Denver
By David Amstutz / Associate Sports Editor
DENVER, Colo.-To call it easy would be a disservice to an extraordinary group of players and coaches. Really, to categorize it as anything but difficult would be unfair to a program that has come so excruciatingly close in each of the past two seasons.

But it sure looked effortless on the surface. Using the skill of one of the best teams to ever grace the ice in Chestnut Hill, Boston College captured its third-ever title on Saturday night in Denver, defeating rival Notre Dame 4-1 in the national championship game.

The Boston College Eagles baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on Friday against No. 1 Florida State. The Seminoles won the first game, 8-6, and completed the doubleheader sweep with a 4-3 victory in game two. Senior Terry Doyle (3-4) allowed seven runs in six innings and got the loss in the first game, as the Eagles failed to capitalize on six Seminole errors.

What a championship game. The best one since … well, since the last time Kansas repped half of the last pair standing. In a tournament full of boring blowouts, where the average margin of victory was in double digits, where the only surprise in the Final Four was that there were no surprises, this is what we all were watching for, waiting for.

A teacher once told me that the purpose of his class was "about the journey, and not the grade." I politely told him that he was full of it. I only cared about the grade. Until today, I've never really cared about the journey - just the end result. I'll reluctantly admit that I'm a bit Machiavellian in that sense, but to quote underwhelming Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden, who cares if you can't "finish the job"? On Saturday night in Denver, I witnessed the culmination of both an incredible journey and a surreal final result, and it changed my mind.

After Saturday night's game, I kept thinking about something a friend said to me in the abyss of last year's national championship game. You know, the one where Boston College had a lead on Michigan State into the third period, only to lose in the final 20 seconds? The one that was BC's second straight heartbreaking title-game loss, the kind of loss that can completely drain a person of the will to do anything.

Nathan Gerbe led the team in scoring. John Muse was the star freshman goaltender. But senior captain Mike Brennan was the heart and soul of this team, and the unquestioned leader. He helped will this "team of destiny" to a national title, with his grit, hard work, and leadership.

On the surface, North Dakota had it all: the crazy fan support, reminiscent of the Cameron Crazies at Duke, the annoying "Let's Go Sioux" chant that so many rivals seem to have, the eye-catching cheerleaders who looked like they came straight from the SEC.

After falling behind in the early going, the Eagles went on an offensive tear to cruise past the Northeastern Huskies Wednesday at Fraser Field in Lynn, 13-6. The Eagles will take on the University of Massachusetts in the Beanpot final this Wednesday at Fenway Park.

Spring is in full swing and that can only mean one thing to diehard baseball fans - time to get the old league back together. Men (and women) of all ages are once again coming together to play fantasy baseball, the oldest and most popular of all fantasy sports.

Most sports fans at this school are extremely lucky. The teams at Boston College are usually competitive, and if you're from New England or the tri-state area, like me, your teams are always relevant even if they're terrible (see: New York Knicks). However, this year is already becoming one of the most intriguing sports years in history, and it's only April.

By Catherine Cypher Heights Staff The Boston College women's lacrosse team traveled to North Carolina Saturday looking to challenge a Duke team mired in a four-game losing streak and battling for position in the ACC.   The Blue Devils, however, came out strong and were consistent throughout the game, sending the Eagles home on the losing end of a 16-6 score.
