The compactors are a result of the efforts of Katherine Walsh, A&S '08, and Katherine Cava, A&S '08, as well as Manning and Thomas Devine, vice president of facilities management. Walsh, a co-president of EcoPledge, said that the idea to install the compactors came up as part of her work with Manning. Walsh and Cava formulated an agenda of sustainability practices for the University to consider. Walsh said that many of the goals they set for the year were embraced by the administration and have been or are in the process of being implemented.

"[Last] summer, we had come up with a whole Power Point presentation of things we wanted to have happen this year," Walsh said. "We worked with Deirdre [Manning] to put it together." She said that Facilities Management was instrumental in getting the units installed. "Facilities Management has been our biggest supporter," Walsh said.

Among the other initiatives Walsh and Cava headed this year were the launch of a University sustainability Web page, the introduction of some sustainable products in the bookstore, and the continuing Bulb Brigade program, which switch incandescent light bulbs for more environmentally friendly fluorescent ones.
