Boston College (20-23, 5-18 ACC) dropped two straight games on Friday and Saturday to No. 22 North Carolina State (29-13, 14-8 ACC) in North Carolina. The Eagles lost the first game 5-1 and the second 3-2.
The second game featured a great pitching duel. Eric Surkamp (4-2) earned the win for N.C. State in five innings of work. He allowed one earned run on three hits, with six strikeouts and two walks.
BC's Terry Doyle (3-6) took the loss, despite tossing his finest game of the season in a five-inning, one-hit performance. He allowed one run with five strikeouts and five walks.
Mickey Wiswall and Matt Hamlet each had two hits for the Eagles.
Garrett Smith hit his third home run of the season to keep the game close.
The game was scoreless until the fourth inning. With two outs and men on first and third base, the Eagles threatened, but did not score a run.
The Wolfpack immediately responded with offense of their own. After Doyle walked two batters, Hamlet attempted to turn a double play. His throw was off the mark, and one run scored.
N.C. State added another run in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Doyle walked a batter to give the Wolfpack a 2-0 advantage.
The teams traded runs in the sixth inning. In the top half, BC's Eric Campbell had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom, N.C. State scored on a wild pitch by Nick Asselin.
Smith's seventh-inning blast and a ninth-inning rally by the Eagles made the game interesting, but N.C. State prevailed, 3-2.
In the first game, Wolfpack starter Clayton Shunick (5-4) earned the victory by pitching eight strong innings. He allowed one earned run with one walk.
The Eagles could never put together a rally, as Shunick allowed just four hits while striking out 11 batters.
Dan Houston suffered the loss. He lasted seven innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits. He had five strikeouts and four walks.
Campbell went two-for-four with two doubles. He scored BC's lone run in the second inning. Garrett Smith plated him with an RBI single.
The Wolfpack answered with three runs in the third. They scored with a single to left field and followed this with a two-run homer to right-center.
N.C. State added another run in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
