The Florida State Attorney's Office said Thursday that it would not pursue charges against Bonzie Colson, Boston College assistant basketball coach, who was accused of assaulting a Florida State University band member after Sunday's game at FSU.
A member of the FSU band filed charges against Colson after reportedly being shoved by the coach while the two were passing each other between the media table and the bleachers after the game.
An off-duty officer attending the game took the report. "I ... was exiting the basketball court and found myself stuck between the media table and the basketball team," the student wrote in the report. "A coach was in my way ... I looked at him and said, ‘Excuse me.' He took his hands, one on each of my shoulders, and shoved me by him."
Maj. Jim Russell of the Florida State Police Department told reporters that a witness confirmed that Colson used his hands to guide the student around him, but not to push the student.
BC athletics officials met with members of the coaching staff and other eyewitnesses Monday evening to hear their side of the story, said Chris Cameron, director of media relations for athletics. The issue is being handled internally between the two institutions and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Monk Bonasorte, FSU's senior associate athletics director, said the incident was "unfortunate," and the athletics department is taking steps to make sure nothing like that happens again.
"We regret that we put the band in an uncomfortable situation," Bonasorte said. "We have rectified the problem, and we won't put the band in that position again."
