Thumbs Up:
Reggie Jackson – Sunday night’s win over Miami was exciting enough, but it’s not every day that we get to see a man fly. Reggie Jackson cleared and floored 6’9 opponent Reggie Johnson (Coincidence? I think not.) in a Jordan-esque circa Space Jam dunk. Although the point didn’t count due to charging, the moment will live on forever in the hallowed halls of YouTube.
Christmas Baskets – All those freshmen looking to quickly spend their remaining meal plan dollars need look no further than the BC dining halls’ Christmas displays. Buckets stuffed with candy, toys, and all other manners of holiday treats have more uses than can be named: last minute secret Santa gift, a shared gift for a friend’s eight-man, or maybe a secret snack stash while cramming in O’Neill? No one would know.
Nativity Scene – If finals are getting you down, take a break and a stroll down Linden Lane to find the most peaceful place on campus. In front of Bapst, nestled in the snow, is a life-size nativity scene, lit up like a beacon of Christmas in the blizzard of exams. For an added treat, turn around and look at the small golden tree in St. Mary’s window. Silent night, holy night…
Home – “Oh, there’s no place like home for the holidays,” and luckily, come the 21st, BC’s campus will be deserted and we’ll all be en route back to our roots. Be prepared to eat way too much, get way too much sleep, and generally be ultra-comfy until January. Safe travels and Merry Christmas.
Thumbs Down:
BC Athletics – Although the bowl choice may have left some dismayed that traveling to the game would prove difficult, except for the West coasters, the prospect of facing off against the Trojans softened the blow. That is, until it was announced that our own Screaming Eagles will be unable to attend the game due to financial cuts. The idea that some Californian high school marching band will be playing “For Boston” is too much for this Superfan to take.
Coffee Chaos – Anyone who ventures into the Rat in between classes during the morning (particularly between the time of 10:15 and 10:30 Tuesday / Thursday) will find a zoo surrounding the coffee. Elbows knock, sugar is spilled, and general madness ensues as 50 students all try to get their caffeine fix in the five minutes between classes. It’s no wonder it’s such a popular spot, it’s the only place on campus that offers substitutes for the, albeit, classic Central Highlands Blend.
Shopping – The holiday season is a stressful time for the inept gift giver, and by the age of 18 it’s no longer O.K. to “help out” or “sign the card.” Hopefully the slush will have disapeared by the time Newbury Street will be receiveing my patronage.
