As the Chair of Romance Languages & Literatures, I am writing in reference to your March 28 editorial titled, "Higher standards should apply not only to students," which contains the following subtitle: "Misuse of Quia is a small issue in the context of the larger problems facing the romance languages department." I am not aware of the "larger problems facing [our] department" and wonder if you would be kind enough to explain exactly what you mean.
My colleagues who are in charge of coordinating the language sections will be responding to your editorial separately. I would simply like to point out that The Heightsseems to be developing a habit of publishing inaccurate and irresponsible statements about our department. Let me reiterate the wish I already expressed in response to the misleading article published in your May 6th, 2010 issue: "Next time The Heightsdecides to devote an article to a department, or to an important academic matter, I hope that it will take the time to research the topic more seriously in order to avoid errors and inaccuracies." (see my May 8th letter below.)
