How perfect that on the last day of Women's History Month I stumbled across the B-Line post celebrating a new Twitter creation: BCgirlproblems. The creator of this misbegotten project likens it to the other popular Twitter craze of adding #_____girlproblems to the end of trivial tweets. As a compulsive user of Twitter, I have laughed at and even used #girlproblems in some of my Tweets. However, to create a Twitter account that uses BC's logo and name for the purpose of mocking BC women is absurd. Not only are the tweets based entirely on stereotypes, they also make the women of BC look like vacuous morons.
Without a doubt I have had BCgirlproblems, such as people taking the elevator up one floor or losing my Eagle card, and the truth behind some of these tweets is not lost on me. Yet why anyone who goes to this university would want "How am I supposed to vote when I know them only as the orange team and the yellow team," or "This accounting homework has too many numbers," publicized for everyone to see is beyond my understanding. Sure the page will probably only be looked at by a subset of the BC population, but I still find it embarrassing that someone might think women at this school actually think in such a manner.
Furthermore, where is the male equivalent of BCgirlproblems? I know for a fact that men are just as guilty of bemoaning life's trivialities, so why aren't they the brunt of satire? It is the fact that only the women of BC are singled out that should make this incredibly offensive to all of the thinking women on this campus.
So if BC women think it is funny to portray themselves as vain, shallow, ignorant, and boy-crazy, so be it. Call me a stick in the mud, but I'm not going to be laughing.
