A water main broke at the corner of Lake Street and Commonwealth Avenue Thursday afternoon, suspending B-line service on the Green Line at the Boston College Station and affecting nearby businesses, Deputy Chief of the Newton Fire Department Mike McNamara said.
The break happened only feet away from the Newton and Boston city line at about 1:00 p.m., flooding the intersection and the basement of a small strip mall, McNamara said.
“The water was pouring into this basement, right onto the electrical panel,” he said.
Businesses, including Flatbreads Café, El Pelón Taqueria, and Dunkin’, lost power and closed down for the day, according to McNamara. He said the break did not affect BC’s campus or apartment units on Commonwealth Avenue.
Both Boston Police and Newton Fire Department officials responded to the break. Boston Police diverted westward traffic on Commonwealth Avenue north onto Lake Street and south into BC’s main campus.
McNamara said an old pipe seven or eight feet below street level may have caused the break.
The MBTA restored regular service on Green Line B between the Packard’s Corner and BC stations at around 3:40 p.m., according to a tweet from the transit provider. Repairs to the pipe will have to wait overnight, McNamara said.
