Professor Howard Straubing took the reigns of Boston College’s computer science department earlier this summer. Straubing, a 35-year veteran of the department, will serve as chairman for the next three years, succeeding Professor Sergio Alvarez.
UCLA professor Linda Sax lectured on the gender and race gaps that exist within the realm of computer science education on Thursday.
Boston College has “temporarily paused” the registration of new computer science majors—a decision that is a byproduct of the CS department’s rise in popularity and will undoubtedly affect prospective majors and course registration.
The number of computer science majors more than quadrupled from 2007 to 2016, but the faculty body has remained relatively small.
Computer science has 309 majors and minors, but only nine faculty.
Throughout Hack the Heights the food added up to a feast of 60 El Pelon burritos, 45 pints of ice cream, 50 total pizzas, three dozen bagels, four dozen donuts, and eight “Box ‘O Joes” from Dunkin Donuts.
