Weekly Sports Roundup: Week of March 15

Men’s Soccer

After not competing during the fall season, Boston College men’s soccer (1-2, 0-0 Atlantic Coast) earned its first win of the season on Saturday when it shut Louisville (3-7-1, 2-1-0 Atlantic Coast) out 4-0. The Eagles scored two goals in the first half and two in the second, while goaltender Christian Garner made five saves in his fifth career shutout to hold the Cardinals scoreless. Michael Suski found the back of the net for two of BC’s goals. Jorge Dickens and Kristofer Konradsson also got in on the action with one each.

Track & Field

BC men’s and women’s track and field opened their outdoor seasons over the weekend at the Yellow Jacket Invitational in Georgia.

For the women, Marne Sullivan’s 2:11.32 was BC’s best time in the 800 meter run of the day and was enough for second place. Anna Oeser finished second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:27.68, and the 4×400 relay team of Sullivan, Anna Cleary, Sarah Heckel, and Katherine Mitchell finished in third with a time of 3:54.18.

On the men’s side, Marcus Manson’s 49.14 time earned him fourth place in the 400 meter run. Sean Sullivan finished third in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:49.31, and Kyle Faddis finished fourth in the 2,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 6:22.38.

Women’s Tennis

BC women’s tennis (4-7, 2-7) took on No. 12 NC State (11-3, 6-2) on the road on Friday afternoon. BC’s Natasha Irani and Laura Lopez won their singles matches, but those wins were all the Eagles could muster in a 5-2 defeat. Kylie Wilcox put up a fight despite eventually falling in a third-set tiebreaker, but Yufei Long, Maria Ross, and Marice Aguiar all lost in two sets.

The Eagles continued their road trip on Sunday with a match against No. 29 Wake Forest (9-6, 5-3), which resulted in BC’s third straight 2-5 loss. This time, Irani and Aguiar took home match wins in the three and four slots while BC lost the rest of its matches, including a doubles sweep.

Women’s Soccer

BC women’s soccer (1-9, 1-7) lost its second game of the new year on Sunday to Rhode Island (1-5-2, 0-1-2 Atlantic 10). The Eagles led 1-0 at halftime, but an eventful second half led to a 3-2 BC loss.

Michela Agresti scored the first goal of the game for BC and the only goal of the first half. The second goal didn’t come until 25 minutes into the second half, although this time it was Rhode Island doing the scoring. BC struck next just under fifteen minutes later, but Rhode Island responded under four minutes later to tie it back up. The game remained tied into extra time, when Rhode Island’s Brooke Cavino ended it in the 92nd minute.

Volleyball

BC volleyball (1-11, 0-11) lost to Clemson (11-8, 5-7 ACC) on Saturday for its second straight loss. The Eagles are still without a conference victory across the fall and spring seasons, and although they challenged the Tigers in Saturday’s first set, they lost decisively in the next two.

Izzy Clavenna led BC’s offensive attack with eight kills, many of which were set up by Grace Penn, who led the Eagles with 18 assists. Saturday’s match was BC’s first in eight days, as last Saturday’s match against UNC was canceled

The Eagles attempted to bounce back Sunday with a match against NC State (8-7, 7-7), but their play resembled Saturday’s. BC dropped the first set 14-25 before competing in the second and losing it by just three points. The Eagles lost the third set by six points to finish the game.

Amaka Chukwujekwu led BC in kills with five. Sophia Lambros led the Eagles in assists with 10 while also earning 11 digs.
