The Boston City Council Committee on Jobs, Wages, and Workforce Development questioned graduate students from Boston College, Northeastern University, Boston University, and Harvard University.

The Boston College Graduate Employees Union (BCGEU-UAW) released a letter on Oct. 31, in which it said that the University had disciplined over a dozen graduate students in response to flyering efforts on Sept. 28.

Georgetown graduate students voted 555-108 in favor of unionization to complete the final step toward recognition and official unionization.

"Under normal circumstances, it would be unfortunate that the union feels compelled to protest at an event from which so many students benefit."

About 30 members of the Boston College Graduate Employees Union (BCGEU-UAW) first walked out of the annual President’s Address in Robsham Theater before carrying out a planned picket outside Pops on the Heights Friday night.

The letter was written in response to the union spreading what the administration believed was false information in correspondence sent to University trustees and faculty members, according to a person familiar with the letter.

“It’s given us a really big lift to know that there is so much support, and it’s just another indication of how much of a growing movement graduate worker unionization is across the country—it’s not just something that’s happening on this campus,” said Gage Martin, a union member and Ph.D. student at BC.

“These workers are not going away, and we will stand with them for as long as it takes and and we will coordinate our resources to support them,” said Dennis Williams of the United Auto Workers.

“The United Auto Workers’ withdrawal of its petition to the [National Labor Relations Board] means that the UAW is no longer the exclusive bargaining agent for graduate students at Boston College and there is no action pending before the NLRB,” University Spokesman Jack Dunn said in an email.

By rescinding its petition with the NLRB, the union ended legal proceedings with the organization, which could have compelled the University’s recognition of the union.

“In recent weeks, the NLRB has issued decisions that make clear it is a partisan vehicle for limiting workers’ rights,” the Boston College Graduate Employees Union organizing committee wrote in an email.
