After the tragic loss of one of her teammates on her high school soccer team, Lori Niehaus has carried the number 11 with her in all athletic endeavors, and will continue to do so on Monday.
“The fact that Boston College is once again among the top Fulbright producing research universities is a testament first and foremost to the quality of our students, to their inventiveness, breadth of interests, and hard work,” said Paul Christensen, director of the student fulbright program at BC.
“Before I went to Tajikistan, I was more afraid to take risks,” said Omeed Alidadi, one the Heights’ ‘Seniors to Watch.’
With 10 winners, BC remains among top producers of Fulbright grants for research institutions, yet places lower than most recent years.
The road to winning a major national fellowship or scholarship does not begin—in many cases—during a student’s junior or senior year of college. At Boston College, prospective candidates for prestigious awards often start as early as their freshman or sophomore years.
At Boston College, over 20 faculty members serve as coordinators for each specific fellowship, aiding applicants as they work through various portions of the process, particularly the essay questions in which they must discuss their future career goals and plans to use the education or funds they will receive if selected.
For students looking for an international experience doing either research or English teaching after completing their undergrad degrees, the word “Fulbright” may spell out an answer.
