In its last game, Boston College field hockey could not overcome a deficit against No. 1 North Carolina on the road, falling 3–1.
On Monday, No. 11 BC (8–5, 1–3 Atlantic Coast) did the exact opposite. After Brown (4–7, 0–4 Ivy) scored the match’s first goal 10 minutes into the game, the Eagles exploded for four second-half goals en route to a 4–2 home win. BC notched 22 total shots compared to just three for the Bears.
Brown, however, managed to get off to a hot start, as Imogen Govan carried the ball toward the end line and fired a pass to junior Katie McCallum, who found the back of the net to put Brown ahead 1–0.
After starting off slowly, BC won a penalty corner with three minutes left in the first frame. As a result, Peyton Hale and Olivia Hahn rocketed back-to-back shots, but Brown’s freshman goalkeeper Kylee Del Monte stopped both.
Del Monte was a brick wall the entire first half, totaling five saves off 11 BC shots, five of which were on target. In the second quarter alone, the Eagles had eight shots but simply could not score.
Brown, meanwhile, registered only two shots in the first half. The Bears entered halftime with a 1–0 advantage.
The Eagles finally made a breakthrough in the third quarter. BC’s equalizing goal came with 8:36 left in the frame, as Martina Giacchino passed to Hale, who found the top right corner of the net after a penalty corner. The goal marked Hale’s third of the season, and Giacchino tallied two assists on Monday.
The penalty corner was in BC’s favor all afternoon, as the Eagles recorded a season-high 17 compared to Brown’s two.
BC took the lead less than three minutes later off Simone Hefting’s backhand shot—her second goal of the year—following yet another penalty corner. The Eagles tallied nine penalty corners in the third quarter alone, along with seven shots.
Hale added her second goal of the game six minutes into the fourth quarter off a solid pass from Hefting. Once again, the score was a result of a penalty corner, with the Eagles displaying seamless passing.
Hefting capped off her night by finding the back of the net with 8:18 left in the game. Giacchino notched her second assist on the play that followed another penalty corner.
Brown managed to score its second goal—and the final goal of the game—with five seconds left, but it was far too little too late. The Bears struggled to create consistent pressure on the Eagles’ net all match, only recording one shot after their promising first quarter.
