“The thing with chemo is like, you can read all the side effects, you can read that like you’re going to have a metallic taste in your mouth, or you can read that you’ll lose your eyelashes,” Lakhani said. “But until someone else experiences it you never fully understand the scope of the problem or the scope of how the other person feels.”
“I told [my parents] like a year and a half before, ‘I’m gonna do this no matter what,’” Brickner said. “The motivation behind it was to be able to see the country more deliberately, see it slower, and meet new people. I wanted to force myself to be able to stay in the towns that people usually drive by.”
“He could be some billionaire tech tycoon living in Silicon Valley or he could be a father of five in rural Indiana,” Smyth said. “But it didn’t matter who he was. I just trusted that Gift of Life was doing what they needed to do to save a person’s life.”
“The pandemic has basically illuminated a lot of the stuff that was going on under the hood when it came to [workplace] culture,” Bishop said. “I don’t think it fundamentally changed anything. Remote work doesn’t change culture… If you have a shitty culture in person, you will have a shitty culture remotely. If you’ve got a great culture in person, you’re likely still going to have a good culture remote. I think that we were always going to be fully remote. I don’t believe you need to work in an office.”
“My daughters seemed disappointed … so we wrote the idea in their invention journal,” Fonte said. “We signed it and then the next day I went into work, and I started asking my engineer friends, ‘Do you think we could freeze six ounces of ice cream in a minute?’”
“Marketing is about storytelling,” he said. “It’s about connecting with people. And mastering those fundamentals like empathy, insights, what motivates people, how to connect with people through story and words—that is the craft.”
“My whole life is dedicated to studying what happens with the clash between idealistic educators and the reality of politics and power,” he said. “Our society has become more and more grotesquely unequal, and that’s really bad for childhood well-being.”
“Everyday there were and still are tough challenges, whether that’s product market fit, fundraising, building the team, or programming,” McDermott said. “There were multiple times when we wondered if it would even work or be able to stay alive. Some of our highest highs and lowest lows have happened in the span of the same day. It’s very much how a startup works.”
“We’re constantly producing chocolate,” Addison said. “We’re roasting, we’re grinding the beans, we’re molding chocolate or packaging. So every day is a little bit different. Depending on the order, sometimes we’re doing chocolate tasting events.”
“I was living in Brazil, and people were saying, ‘Oh, but my dream is running the Boston Marathon,’” Samary said. “So I had the goal of one time in my life running the Boston Marathon. The Boston Marathon is like the Holy Grail of everyone that runs.”
