Weekly Roundup: Fall Season Gets Underway for Boston College

It’s Monday morning. So, over your cup of coffee before another week of classes or work, here’s everything you need to know about the past week of Boston College Athletics. This is the Weekly Roundup.

It’s been a banner week for Boston College sports, with every fall team getting its season underway and a bulk of them going undefeated in the early going. Football started the season strong with a statement win in front of 35,213 people at Alumni Stadium, while both soccer teams picked up wins and volleyball and field hockey had their fair share of ups and downs.

RECAPS

FOOTBALL (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast)

BC 35, Virginia Tech 28 (Sat.) — Instead of starting with a weaker FBS opponent like Massachusetts or Northern Illinois, the Eagles started with a much bigger foe: the Hokies. They more than rose to the occasion, using a high-scoring first half and a resilient final quarter to beat Virginia Tech for the second year in a row.  Anthony Brown threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another, with one going to Zay Flowers—a true freshman who surpassed 100 all-purpose yards. Some things that stood out: The defense forced four turnovers, the running backs rotated well, and the secondary had an up-and-down day.

FIELD HOCKEY (1-1)

BC 2, Providence 1 (Fri.) — The Eagles’ season opener came against a team that they’d historically dominated: the Friars. BC had won 16 of its last 18 matchups against Providence, and while it required a late goal, it came away with another win. The Friars opened the scoring, but the Eagles bounced back as Fusine Govaert scored in the 19th minute and freshman Margo Carlin added the game-winner in the 49th minute. STORY

Fairfield 3, BC 2 (OT) (Sun.) — In a frustrating turn of events, the Eagles blew a two-goal lead to the Stags—a team that they had beaten comfortably in 2018. BC controlled the balance of chances for the first three quarters and got goals from Govaert and Carlin. Then, Fairfield struck for two goals to force overtime, and it took less than two minutes for the Stags to find the game winner. STORY

MEN’S SOCCER (2-0)

BC 2, Quinnipiac 0 (Thurs.) — In a game that featured several water breaks due to heat, the Eagles displayed a host of new players and outclassed the visiting Wildcats. The Eagles got first career goals from senior Adam French and freshman Amos Shapiro-Thompson, while fellow first-year goaltender Giacomo Piccardo had three saves in the shutout. STORY

BC 1, Boston University 0 (Sun.) — The Eagles won their second straight game to start the year with a win over the Terriers on the road. All it took was a moment of brilliance from sophomore Kristofer Konradsson, a preseason All-ACC selection. Konradsson gathered the ball in transition and, from 25 yards out, buried a left-footed shot. Piccardo had five saves in his second straight clean sheet.

WOMEN’S SOCCER (4-0)

BC 3, Boston University 0 (Thurs.) — A nightcap at Newton after the men’s game went the Eagles way in a comfortable manner. After winning its first two games, BC welcomed in its crosstown rivals and promptly registered its first shutout of the year. Gaby Careirro, Jade Ruiters, and Gianna Mitchell all scored and Allie Augur cemented her role as the starting goalkeeper with a pair of saves. STORY

BC 2, Princeton 1 (Sun.) — It’s Sam Smith’s world and we’re just living in it. The freshman continued a stellar start to the season with a two-goal effort against the Tigers, scoring twice in a span of four minutes in the first half. Through four games, Smith has four goals, and the Eagles are a perfect 4-0.

VOLLEYBALL (1-2)

BC wins 1 of 3 at Oregon Classic — The Eagles flew to Eugene, Ore. and took on two Pac-12 opponents and UC Irvine. The Pac-12 is the country’s top conference for volleyball, and it showed as Oregon State and No. 11 Oregon handed BC defeats. The second match of the weekend against UC Irvine, though, went the Eagles’ way and they showed promise overall. STORY
