“This is American exceptionalism in the 21st century,” Andersen said. “Our drift toward … doing our own thing, and having an altogether uncertain grip on reality has overwhelmed our other exceptional national traits and turned us into a less-developed country as well.”
Members of the union are holding work-ins to attract attention to its cause, with the goal of showing that they are working employees rather than just students.
Through various mediums, including song, prayer, poetry, and public speaking, the night addressed the marginalization of people of color and minorities at large.
“It’s easy to be dissuaded from living here because of the distance and separation from campus, but in my opinion the benefits outweigh the small costs,” said Justin Panzariono, CSOM ’20.
Due to the widespread use of social media and smartphones, it has become much easier to protect human rights, said Jay Aronson, the director of the Center for Human Rights Science at Carnegie Mellon University.
Unmotivated to walk to the dining hall one night sophomore year, JB Bruggeman, CSOM ’19, and his roommates realized that students would benefit from an on-campus delivery service.
“Students should also know that residence hall live-in staff have all been trained to have these types of conversations and provide referrals to these offices,” Jemima Pierre, the ASAP Program Manager, said in an email.
Cheat Codes has toured with The Chainsmokers and released “No Promises,” a collaboration with Demi Lovato, in 2017. Their biggest hit is “Sex,” which has over 100 million YouTube views.
A number of supporters of the union organized to do their work, displaying signs on the back of their chairs that read “I’m working on …” followed by their subject matter.
“Dan has always had great relationships with a lot of the students, and we thought it would be a good idea to bring him back, so that we have another person involved in those conversations and to consult with as we look at [what] we’re doing,” Jones said.
